Florence

As the capital of Italy’s beautiful Tuscany region, Firenze is famous for its awe-inspiring architecture, rich culture and delicious culinary tradition. With a walkable Old Town, take to the ancient, cobbled streets and explore iconic sites like the Duomo or Ponte Vecchio on foot, before treating your tastebuds to some al fresco dining at one of the city’s many authentic eateries.

When to visit

An ever-popular destination, it can get humid and crowded in Florence over summer – with temperatures soaring to around 35°C. We recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons, September to November or April to late-May, when the climate is less muggy, and the tourist hoards are kept at bay.

For an Instagram-worthy bite, look no further than La Murate or Shake Café, grab an artisan coffee at Ditta Artigianale or sample some classic Tuscan dishes at Mercato Centrale. If you’re an avid reader, don’t skip Giunti Odeon a multi-purpose library, cinema and bookstore.

Maastricht

Nestled among the rolling hills of Limburg on the River Maas, Maastricht is the oldest city (and one of the prettiest) in the Netherlands, with a history dating back more than 2,000 years. Wander around the charming Old Town and explore medieval churches, basilicas and ancient city walls, then try some local Limburgse vlaai pie in one of the city’s many bustling cafés and restaurants.

When to visit

Like much of the Netherlands, Maastricht gets its best weather between May and September. Unfortunately, the high season also comes with bigger crowds. We’d suggest visiting in Spring when weather is bright and breezy, and you can make the most of the city’s surrounding nature.
